J et R Selections, because of our good reputation in the Cotes du Rhone, was referred to a small burgundy estate in the Cotes du Nuits by Domaine du Pegau; the two domaines exchange their chateauneufs and burgundies for their personal cellars. Quelle bonne chance! We offer eleven outstanding estate bottled burgundies imported directly from the domaine. Except for the Clos de Beze, J et R imports Raphet's traditional cuvees, the ones Jean Raphet himself prefers, aged for 2 years in small oak barrels, rather than the new oak cuvee bottled after 1 year imported from a French broker. J et R Selections is the exclusive US importer of the traditional cuvees. Clive Coates in Cote d'Or writes: "Jean Raphet and his son run this important domaine. Only 5% of new wood is used, but the remainder of the barrels are recent enough. The line is impressive, the atmosphere efficient, and the results can be very good: rich, full, plummy, and succulent." In Parker's Wine Advocate, Jean Raphet is described as "dedicated to quality, he is one of the rare Burgundians to have never used a filter." The 1997s are in inventory. Only a few 1995s and 1996s are left in inventory. Charmes-Chambertin Grand Cru 1997Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar #83 [90 rating]: "Good deep red. Higher-pitched bitter cherry, currant, vanilla and roasted nut aromas, plus floral and stony nuances. Juicy and intensely flavored, with lovely inner-mouth sweetness. Complicating notes of licorice, coffee and pepper. Finishes firm and fresh. A very suave, gently extracted Charmes with a lovely balance for the vintage." Clos de la Roche Grand Cru 1997Raspberry. Aromatic deep red nose. Soft full blueberry, black cherry on the tongue. Blue syrup follow-through. Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 1995The Wine Advocate [88-91+ rating]: "Aromatically spicy with notes of toasty oak, it exhibits a velvety texture and flavors of crisp, deep cherries and sweet oak. Full-bodied and long, this admirably extracted Pinot should be at its peak between 2003-2010." Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 1996Brooding! A big, currently hard edged wine with deep, dark presence. Flavors of crisp, deep cherries and sweet oak. Ripe and full almost sweet fruit with a firm edge of acidity for evolution Long follow-through. Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 1997Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar #83 [88 rating]: "Good medium red. Perfumed, complex aromas of cherry, smoke and spices. Bright and firm, but with good volume. Licorice and mint flavors, plus a faint suggestion of heat." Clos de Bèze Grand Cru 1997Deep red cherry. Delicate soft bouquet. Full round fruit with a hint of spice that fades forever. Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Lavaux Saint-Jacques 1997Raspberry. Red fruit with some herbs on the nose. Full and round, red fruit with spice, and everything nice. Long spice and red fruit follow-through. Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Les Combottes 1997Red cherry. Delicate spice/herbal bouquet. Full, round, purple fruit. Long black cherry follow-through. Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Millandes 1997Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar #83 [89 rating]: "Medium red. More minerally, discreet aromas of raspberry gunpowder and chocolate; very Morey! Showed a smoky, charry quality with aeration. Sweet, dense and fine in the mouth; gives a cheqy impression of extract. Gently spicy, subtle and long. Not at all overoaked." Gevrey-Chambertin 1997Light red cherry, delicate nose. Very balanced, with some spice. Long spice follow-through. Gevrey-Chambertin 1996Muscular, taught, and youthful. Good depth of fruit for a Gevrey Village. Good balance of fruit and acidity. Chambolle-Musigny 1997Light red cherry, wildflower nose. Pleasurable fruit with raspberry, medium texture. Long and pleasurable follow-through. Morey-Saint-Denis 1997Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar #83 [88 rating]: "Good full red. Complex nose combines spicy red fruits and dark berries, mocha, licorice and a minty nuance. Juicy and delineated, but with good density. Already displaying considerable personality. Finishes spicy, with fine tannins and noteworthy length. Excellent village wine." Bourgogne rouge 1998This AOC Bourgogne from a Cotes d'Or estate is a fine example of Pinot Noir. It is unfiltered and aged 16 months in old oak barriques. Soft fruit bouquet, round with some spice and fine texture, light spice with a hint of red cherry on the follow-through. |
