Côtes du Ventoux

The Cotes du Ventoux appellation mostly is in the Comtat, sheltered by Mont Ventoux, le giant de Provence, and on the Plateau de Vaucluse. Thus, its terroirs are different from those of the Cotes du Rhone, being mostly protected from the mistral by Mont Ventoux. The grapes are the same as those of the Southern Cotes du Rhone, but the wines are less robust.

J et R imports from this excellent Cote du Ventoux cooperative:

Côtes du Ventoux cuvée 3 Messes Basses rouge 2001

Lovely, brilliant color. Bright, fresh red berry fruit nose with accents of pepper and spice. This cuvee exhibits much of the rustic character and "garrigue" of southern Rhone wines but in a more elegant style. Supple and well balanced, with perhaps a bit more "grip" than previous vintages. No oak; aged in concrete vats. 40% grenache, 20% syrah, 10% mourvedre, 20% cinsault and 10% carignan.

Côtes du Ventoux Altitude 500 rouge 2001

Bright and vibrant color. Fresh, ripe red fruit and spice on the nose-literally bursting with red raspberry (hard candy) scents. Round, broadly textured flavors on the pallet. Wonderfully balanced, supple and "friendly"- a great example of the easy to enjoy nature of good Cotes du Ventoux wines. (Altitude 500 is a parcel 500 meters high on the slopes of Mt. Ventoux, le geant de Provence.)
